[ It has been a very, very long time since Lunafreya has felt this safe, or warm, or happy... or all of the above, honesty. She's practically giddy, although it's near impossible to show it right now considering the circumstances, but to just have him so close and so willing to hold her in his arms, it's almost dreamlike. She'd often wondered what it would be like, growing up, what it would have been like had things not happened the way they had. Would he have come back to visit Tenebrae? She knows she would have gone to see him in Insomnia for sure, to be able to watch him grow and make friends... it would have been a wonderful experience.
Lately, she's found herself thinking about their arranged engagement as well. If that hadn't happened, would they have had a proper courtship? Would they have even... well. It's best not to think about it, probably. Those are scenarios that could never happen, and the past is in the past. The fact that he is willing to spend this time with her is all that matters now, and he is indulging her silly thoughts about a future with him. She's grateful for that.
His question has her opening her eyes, though, a thoughtful expression crossing over her exhausted features. She's... that question is one she's not used to. Usually, people are telling her where to go or what to do, or shoving papers full of lists of duties that need to be performed with people in armor and guns following her the whole way. Their people, her duty, his safety, and a whole lot of resistance against the Empire have ever only ever been her first and only priorities. But now there's nothing left other than his safety, and she has nothing to really offer him for that other than non-stop prayers to the Astrals. ]
I... just want to be with you. [ She ducks her head back down almost shyly, but she's smiling too, albeit a little nervously. Writing things down on pen and paper is so much easier than having to say them, despite her time in the public eye. So she hides her face in the crook of his neck again in an attempt to both hide how pink her pale cheeks are growing and to avoid seeing any sort of look of horror that might be growing on his face. ]
We could do anything, I don't mind. So long as I am able to remain at your side, that's all that really matters to me. [ She's enjoying those fingers in her hair, though. They ease her anxiety, and she closes her eyes again, her nervous smile turning far more content. Really... if she were a cat, she'd be purring right now. ]
[ oh, that's cute. cute isn't really a word he normally associates with luna – there's beautiful, regal, perfect, even ethereal. this layer of cute is just something else he can remember, tucking this memory of her blushing and looking bashful and cuddling up next to him. luna contains multitudes.
he's so relieved and so enamored that he actually momentarily forgets to be awkward. will wonders never cease? ]
You can have me, [ he promises her without thinking, keeping those fingers brushing through her hair in an attempt to be soothing. it looks like it's helping and, well, he likes doing it. if anything, it's an attempt to get in as much physical contact before they part ways once more. and hopefully with less time apart.
he loves her, which is the long and short of it. she has given all of herself to this cause, to the fate that had chosen them both, and he wants to ensure that all of this was worth it. ]
[ Luna's heart momentarily stops -- skips a beat, rather, at his words. He may not be a man of many words, but the ones he speaks are always so real and so, so very meaningful. Noctis is wonderful in so many ways he has yet to even realize himself.
It does not take her long to answer, though, her tired voice sounding almost playful, a smile tugging at her lips but she dares not to lift her head. Besides, his fingers in her hair feel amazing and she definitely does not want to disturb that, thank you. ]
Is that a promise, my King? [ She hums, lightly drumming her fingers against his chest before they move up to rest against his cheek, and she lifts her head to press a light kiss against his other cheek, the one closest to her, before she lays her head down again, nestled against his shoulder once more. She loves him, too, more than anything in the entire world. She has since they were children, and nothing is going to change that or come between them. ]
[ he's scared to tell her that he loves her, uncertain of the weight those words carry once they are out in the open. someday, maybe. he wishes it could be today but each time love you skitters to the front of his mind, he clenches up and pulls it back.
'you can have me' will have to do for now, he supposes.
it's his turn to be embarrassed at the press of her lips to the cheek when he lowers his head to meet her, pale skin tinged with pink. it's a happy moment to savor after everything they have been through thus far. but then she calls him king and he freezes up again, quiet for a long time though his hand remains combing through her hair. his father used to be king. he doesn't feel like the king yet even though he should be better prepared.
this wasn't meant to happen. he was meant to go on a trip to marry his old friend. but perhaps his father knew all along what was really meant to come.
noctis's jaw clenches before he smiles down at her, a small, warm expression as his forehead meets the top of her head. ] I promise.
[ Luna doesn't mind. She has known Noctis for long enough to know he is a man of little words, but his actions speak tenfold. He doesn't need to say anything, because she already knows. She loves him, too -- always has, and always will, no matter what.
She can feel him tense up, and for a split second she's afraid he's going to get angry. He may not see it in himself yet, his friends may not see it, but Luna does. He is a king through and through, he is her king, and he has done nothing but good things for his people despite how rushed and forced his position has been. He hasn't had much time to mourn his father or even really try to accept this new role that's been thrust onto him, but he's doing wonderfully -- she thinks he is, at least.
His father would be proud of him. She definitely knows that much for sure.
She can feel relief washing over her as she takes in that handsome smile, and she closes her eyes again as she merely relaxes against him and basks in everything that is Noctis. ] I know... you've yet to break a promise to me, and I know this one will be no different than any of the others.
[ She's quiet for a few moments, listening to the rhythmic sound of his heartbeat, soothing in her ear, before she finally speaks again. ] What is the first thing you are going to do after this is all over, hm?
[ he doesn't feel like a real king. an uncrowned king, maybe. there is little home to return to, lucians now scattered here and there. his father is gone, their families are gone. he almost isn't sure how luna can have such steadfast confidence in him in his abilities when their world is full of so much uncertainty.
but that is how she has been even when he was eight and a little bit ( a lot ) in love with her and everything he believed her to be. maybe there is something to it. he had negotiated with claustra and he had made it this far. he cannot complete this mission set before him without believing in himself.
his heartbeat is steadier now, still a touch jittery if only because he is holding lunafreya in his arms like he has wanted to for years. the simplest action still makes him feel like a teenage boy. as for her question, there is so much to do for the kingdom and for the world. he wants unity. he wants to take down borders. he wants to marry her. ]
Take you to the carnival.
[ not the answer of a king, but it is the answer of one singular noctis lucis caelum, now grinning stupidly to himself. ]
[ Lunafreya will always have confidence in him. In her eyes, Noctis can do no wrong -- whatever steps he takes, whatever decisions he makes, she is here to back him up until the very end. To lend a hand and help shoulder some of his burdens is her job, after all. Not just as Oracle, but as friend and future wife. She wants to offer him support in every way possible in whatever way she can, whether that be lifting his spirits, giving him a shoulder to cry and mourn on, to be a voice of reason, to an ear to vent to... whatever he needs from her, she will gladly give it to him to the best of her abilities.
Eyes remaining closed, she offers a soft, pleased hum as her index finger lightly draws all sorts of obscure shapes and patterns against the front of his shirt just next to where her head rests against his chest. For the umpteenth time since she's awakened, she can feel herself beginning to smile; his answer may not be the answer of a king, but it is genuinely him and she honestly prefers that to any sort of stiff, formal response. Noctis is the most genuine, true person she's ever met, even when they were children. He'd promised her back then he'd purge the Starscourge, and look at him now. This may not be the most ideal way to do it, but even through thick and thin, through his losses and hardships, he is pressing through and keeping his promise.
Noctis never ceases to amaze her, and she doubts he's ever going to stop. ]
That sounds like fun... embarrassingly, I've never been to one. But I have read about them. Is that a date then?
[ There's a playful lilt to her voice as she finally opens her eyes and peers up at him; this subject is so light and airy and wonderful and pleasant, and it fills her with pure, unadulterated joy and hope. Not to mention any time he grins like that, she melts a little; he looks so handsome and she wishes he'd do it more often. Perhaps in time, after things settle down, she can start finding ways to make him smile. ]
